Merci closed her eyes and took a cleansing

breath deep into her lungs, willing her focus to the

work at hand, inventorying all her supplies lined

neatly on the table next to a hand beaten copper

mortar and matching pestle. A medallion,

depicting a dragon nestled inside a scrolling Celtic

design, dangled on a gold chain draped over the

crystal. The pendant flashed with a myriad of

colors from within its faceted surface caused by

the flames of several candles—a black candle for

protection, white for clarity of purpose and the

last, red for passion and intent. In the mortar was

Frankincense, Patchouli, a dried sprig of Heather

and rock salt, the ingredients pounded into a

fragrant powder that teased her nose as its scent

wafted through the room. She crumbled the

charcoal on top of the powder, then set it all

burning with a lighter. A white billow of smoke

rose from the mortar. Her voice strong and clear,

she began reciting from her book of shadows. At

the same time, she grabbed her athame. Its sharp

edge caught the light from the candles as she cut

through the smoke, tracing a pattern of a five-
